AN ON-LINE COMMUNITY SUPPORTING "hands-on" SCIENCE

WELCOME TO THE MAMBO COMMUNITY

Welcome to the MAMBO Community on-line ! This site has been developed as an on-line resource for primary science. The MAMBO Community is completely free to explore and users are encouraged to register as some aspects of the site, which includes downloads, are unavailable to guest users.
Registration is easy and all you need is an email address.

This CoP supports innovation and enhancement of the teaching and learning activities within the primary science curriculum in Ireland.

Me & My Body (MAMBO) is an exciting initiative for Primary School Science. Incorporated with the Irish Primary Science Curriculum, this innovative programme combines an understanding of the human body with “hands-on” scientific investigation, teacher resource material and highly graphical web content.

Bright Sparks Light Workshop

The Bright Sparks workshop is all about exploring and enjoying the science of light. The presentation begins by finding out how much we know about light before going through a brief history. Lots of fun light facts and interactive hands on activities are outlined. Several resources are needed to complete this workshop namely lens, prisms, coloured plastics and cd's. As such this workshop should be used as a guide on how to structure your own light workshop.

Once logged in to the MAMBO Community you will have access to attachments.

THE IMMUNE SYSTEM - MAMBO Workshop

The Immune System is a group of organs that work together to achieve a common goal. During this lesson, students will work together to discover the different parts and roles of their immune systems.

This is a complex topic that includes the skin, mucus, white blood cells and platelets. Students will investigate the role of temperature in detecting infection and how to stop disease spreading. The hands on approach used during this lesson allows the concepts to be explained in a fun, enjoyable and engaging manner for both the teacher and the pupils.

Once logged in to the MAMBO Community you will have access to lesson plans, lesson content, worksheets and presentations related to this topic.

THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM - MAMBO Workshop

A Hands On workshop that allows children to gain a appreciaton of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Children are brought on a voyage through their digestive system from the the mouth to the intestines and the end product!
Along the way, students explore the role of teeth, saliva, stomach acid and all the various parts that make up the Digestive system. A list of all the materials needed for this interesting workshop are included in the files attached for registered users.

THE BLOOD - MAMBO Workshop

In this exciting workshop children will learn about the amazing liquid that is blood. Children will find out about blood's many functions including fighting infection, delivering oxygen and controlling body temperature.
The lesson will explore the four main components of blood - red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets and plasma. The HANDS ON approach employed allows children to build upon knowledge gained during the lesson. Children will get to enjoy making models of each of the blood components.

THE HEART - MAMBO Workshop

This is an exciting interactive workshop for children to learn by exploring about their hearts.
The heart is a large organ located roughly in the centre of the ribcage behind the lungs. The function
of this muscle is to pump blood around the body. The right side of the heart pumps blood to the
lungs (to gather oxygen and leave CO2) and the left side pumps oxygen rich blood all around the
body. During exercise the need for oxygen increases and as a result the rate at which the heart beats
also increases. In this fun interactive lesson the children will learn about the location and function of the heart using charts and illustrations. They will then be given the opportunity to investigate how the heart
is affected by exercise.
