OVERVIEW

The BDI’s education and outreach mission is to engage and excite students of all ages in biomedical science. An inquiry-based philosophy is encouraged with initiatives developed for a variety of audiences. Through our programmes we aim to create novel learning experiences for students, teachers, researchers and the general public. The Institute has a dedicated Education and Outreach laboratory which is the main focus area for education activities. This is a space for visitors to explore biomedical research in an informal environment. Our education objectives are based upon insight gained from rigorous evaluation and feedback from our various audiences. Detailed information is available in the 'Measuring Our Success' section.

Our five key education objectives are as follows:

  • O1: To design and enhance learning & training opportunities in Biomedical Sciences that enhances fourth and fifth level education and promotes lifelong learning.
  • O2: To enhance professional development for all BDI researchers, specifically graduate students and postdoctoral fellows through programmes that develop professional skills in areas such as entrepreneurship, science communication, mentoring & teaching.
  • O3: To enhance the BDI's internship research programme for 3rd level students.
  • O4: To promote creativity & discovery amongst second level students (12-15 years old) through the development of an inquiry based programmes.
  • O5: To engage with the general public and address the social, legal and ethical implications of BDI research through the establishment of a BDI science and society programme.
