CLINICAL RESEARCH STRAND 1: CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE

Cardiovascular Disease 1: Advanced Diagnostics in Platelet Biology
Programme Leaders: Prof. Dermot Kenny, RCSI & Prof. Tony Ricco, DCU

Cardiovascular disease is the major cause of morbidity and mortality globally.

In this project, BDI platelet platforms will be advanced to diagnose and monitor patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease.

Core Competencies:
Platelet Biology
Surface Science

Cardiovascular Disease 2: Miniaturised Diagnostics for Haemostasis and Thrombosis
Programme Leaders: Dr. Tony Killard, DCU & Dr. James O'Donnell, SJH

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) constitutes an important health issue in developed countries and it typically presents as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in the lower limb. Some of these may give rise to pulmonary emboli (PE).

The objective of this project is to design and validate a global coagulation monitoring system using novel sensor platforms provided by our industry partners.

Core Competencies:
Platelet Biology
Biomolecular Recognition
Transduction Science
Microfluidic Platforms
