CLINICAL RESEARCH STRAND 3: INFECTIOUS DISEASES

Infectious Disease 1: Bacterial Meningitis Diagnostic Platform
Programme Leaders: Prof. Terry Smith, NUIG & Prof. Martin Cormican, NUIG, GUH

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the lining surrounding the brain and spinal cord.  Healthy children and young adults are susceptible, and death can occur within a few hours of onset if not treated or cause disabilities including brain damage, hearing loss, loss of limb(s), or learning disabilities.  Meningitis is particularly common in infants under 2 months where the death rate is 50%.

This project involves the design of a biochip to detect the three target organisms of bacterial meningitis.
